my barn is 400 ft away connected to the house with aluminum underground cable. I'm trying to bring a signal out there for cameras. not sure if this is the right product or if the signal will be degraded with aluminum as opposed to copper? Any insights would be appreciated, thanks.

Its been my experience that they are really sensitive to the conditions of the power wires. I don't know if copper/aluminum is much of an issue, but I tried many ways and locations to use the ones I got. Here are some of the things that I discovered: 
1. trying to go through a breaker box didn't work for me (plugged into an outlet in my living room and connecting to a different room on another circuit breaker. sometimes would connect but loose connection often)
2. any medium size motors plugged into the same circuit caused too much noise on the line. small cooling fans like on a computer or audio power amp seemed to be fine, but like a refrigerator or air compressor or a blender/juicer even my microwave would cause it to loose signal. 
I found that for these reasons, it wasn't the solution for me. What I ended up using was to create a "wireless bridge" between 2 low cost routers that i already had laying around and used ddwrt firmware upgrades to make it work (google will help you find them). It works very well and i'm also spanning about 300-400 feet between buildings and even in crappy weather it works pretty good with line of site of the two routers. can be tricky to setup,  but worth the effort. good luck friend.
