Very Reliable 8/20/2019 6:09:07 AM

Pros: The bulk of the time it is up and running. I have used it over 4 years and rely on it for our whole house network.

Cons: It has burped a couple of times, but all it takes is a quick reset and it's good to go.

Overall Review: For the cost, this is clearly a good investment on a long time component. Sorry Newegg no extended warranty needed with this one.

Netgear R8000 GREAT SPEED & WIRELESS 3/6/2019 6:16:54 PM

Pros: Internal network transfer speeds, wireless range on 2.4GHZ, tons of custom settings for security, port forwarding to more then one device, you can DISABLE WPS (that will stop Windows hackers from gaining access - NOT a Linux hacker)

Cons: I don't really have any it does just what it says it will do.

Overall Review: I use all Netgear and have for many years. I have R6200, R6400, R7000, R7900P and this one R8000-100NAS, netgear AC powerline wireless extenders. All work great. I see many complains some valid most just mis-configured devices. Most of the time I see complaints about transfer speeds when they don't take in to account the speed is limited by your hard drive/s, cpu, memory.

Wireless distance the fastest speed of course has the smallest range. :( 5.4GHZ is fine for about 20 to 30 feet, 5.0 GHZ about the same, 2.4 GHZ will have a signal (weak) out to about 100 yards. Full signal to about 50 to 60 yards depending on what's between you and the router. Structures, Walls, Metal fences, in my case enclosed horse stalls... all of those things can cut the signal strength. That's when I add the netgear AC powerline extenders (MAKE SURE THEY ARE IN THE SAME ELECTRICAL PANEL - SAME CIRCUIT IS PERFECT)

Wireless drops that can be a thousand different things. If all your equipment is new or in good shape you shouldn't have any problems. I don't have any signal drops even to the horse cams. LOL Test your equipment on a couple different wireless networks and see if it has no problems or the same problems?

You're never going to get 1,000 Mbps (125 MB/s megabytes) 3.2Gbps (3,200Mbps 400 MB/s) on a system with a max hard drive speed of 50 to 88 MB/s. I get pretty fast speeds but all my systems run Raid 0 Crucial SSD's (8800 to 14000 MB/s) So thinking you will get 3.2 Gbps (400 MB/s) on even a good SSD most likely will never happen your drive is just not fast enough. I nice m.2 PCIE SSD you should see at least 200 up to 400 MB/s.

In closing I do recommend this router or any of "R" series Netgear routers. Just make sure you understand the limits of all your hardware.

PURCHASE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY or WALK AWAY! 8/1/2018 8:13:10 AM

Pros: Love the parental controls. The router worked very well (while it lasted - 1 year)

Cons: Very expensive and the router died a week after the 1 year warranty ran out.

Buy another router, mine came DOA 5/27/2017 7:50:33 AM

Pros: Looks nice

Cons: Would not work out of the box with a brand new Netgear CM600. Netgear technical support is terrible, several days no response from them. Looks like I will be having to send this one back to Newegg. Wish I could give 0 eggs!

Overall Review: Buy another brand router

Expensive, but could be worth it depending on your situation 3/31/2017 1:48:38 PM

Pros: Very Fast
Deals with congested wifi traffic very well thanks to tri-band
Setup was easy, but not straightforward on logging into router

Cons: Very expensive, not necessary for most people
Ugly as sin
Antennas feel fragile, and don't look easily replaceable

Overall Review: I'm using this in a very heavily populated commercial retail strip, surrounded by warehouses. Wifi congestion traffic is terrible here, especially with a couple of government agencies wifi networks nearby. Even cellphone reception suffers here. I tried a couple of other wifi routers. A smaller netgear provided by the ISP, obviously meant for home use, and a linksys dual band also meant for home use. Both were so overwhelmed by the dozens of competing wifi networks nearby they constantly dropped connection, couldn't break 1mbps on speed tests, and even streaming music with chromecast audio caused constant drop outs. To the point not even my point of sale system could reliably connect. All those issues were gone the moment I got this thing setup. Speedtests were topping out my ISP connection on wireless 5ghz.

This device is probably a waste of money in a typical suburban home, and probably most small offices. But it's godsend in a heavily populated commercial area!

Went from 4 to 2 stars in 3 yrs. 3/19/2017 3:06:58 PM

Pros: it recognized my 4Tbit drive no problem, unlike the asus 87R/U. it has a crazy strong signal. my roku got a good signal with the asus 87R and this awesome router gave me excellent.

Cons: I can't stand the fact that the antennas are built into the structure. but at least the signal is extremely strong. lost one egg because of that. But More importantly, newer firmware updates in 2015 prevented my Roku from streaming videos from my video server attached to R8000's 3.0 USB. More details down in other.

Overall Review: Well worth the purchase (got somewhere else about $30 cheaper). some may not like using it to stream video from an ext HDD but I do. it frees up my computer at night to hibernate.

One thing you have to be aware of is if you are using a HDD and it has tons of video on it, when you first hook it up, the router will do what I call, indexing. it sets the HDD up so that you can access through the router. this uses a lot of processor power. It took about 5 minutes for it to settle down. I tell you this because while it's hogging processor speed, I couldn't do certain things wirelessly on my Roku because the router was busy putting a lot of processing work into indexing my huge drive. once all calmed down, life was good. it is fast access to HD video on my ext HDD because it's a fast wireless router along with fast USB 3.0 support.. also, if you remove the drive and plug back in, the indexing starts all over again.

One last thing, this router allows you to hook up a USB 2.0 ext to add more than one 2.0 device to it, but it doesn't allow you to do that for the 3.0. I've even tried it with a USB 3.0 that has it's own power supply so that it would take the load off of the units power. didn't work. I wonder would a firmware update help.

anyhow, enjoy, you wont be disappointed.

NEWS FLASH UPDATE----

3/19/2017 - I purchased this off of E bay in early 2014. Let me give it some credit first. This has excellent coverage. I've rented a home and currently own a home of which both are well over 3800 sq feet. Both with basement, 1st floor and a second floor. It gives really good coverage all around. I still got an extender because it just couldn't send a strong enough signal to my back-yard patio. But in the house, it's awesome.

Here is the problem I ran into, during the summer of 2015: I owned 2 Roku's. Both would stream video from my video server I had attached to my R8000. All of a sudden, my videos stop streaming. It would act like it was going to stream, then it gave an error. I tried everything. I then ran across a way to replace the firmware to customize even more of the features of this wireless router. And what do you know, I was streaming video once again, but not using Netgear's firmware. I then thought to myself: Maybe, just maybe, me not being able to steam has something to do with updating the router. I then went back to Netgear's firmware, but an older version, a version prior to spring of 2015 and what do you know, I was able to view videos from my video server, connected to R8000's 3.0 USB port. I did this around early 2016. I then decided (for almost 9 mos) to wait for Netgear to come out with a firmware that will fix this issue. Surly others are having this problem. It never happened, no update to fix the streaming issue with Roku. I then decided to give up risking my security of using an old firmware just so that I can view videos across my network. I then ran across a good sale on Linksys and decided to "upgrade. My upgrade really wasn't about speed, because the R8000 was the fastest I could go with the ISP I have. It was more so for the updated technology. Sure enough, I was correct. My, now 3, Roku's in my home are streaming with no problem on the Linksys AC5000 (available exclusively for military only on the AAFES Exchange Website), latest firmware.

In closing, if you never plan on using Roku's on your network to stream video from your R8000, then this thing rocks. If you have Rokus, I wouldn't touch this thing with a 10 foot pole. It appears Netgear can care less, it seems, that Roku's can't stream. By the way, I did send communication to Netgear almost 1 1/2 years ago, and they haven't fix the issue. At least, as far as I know.

Wealth of features... not so good wifi 3/5/2017 4:48:17 PM

Pros: - I like ability to split up networks. Well executed, I've had other routers where the "Guest" network is not discrete from the main.
- I like the USB 3 port for a home NAS system. Only experienced issue less than a handful of time over the last year of use.
- I like the cloud access feature. Executed with minimum fuss for said NAS; iOS & Android devices accessed without any issues.
- Has one of the easiest to use shared printer feature among routers on the market.

Cons: - Loss of WIFI service is a fairly regular event.
- Angle of antennae make it not so attractive to mount on walls.
-

Overall Review: -Cannot recommend this due to the WiFi issue.
