Worst router I've ever owned 12/1/2019 12:15:11 PM

Pros: - It looks nice

Cons: - Unreliable network. Devices keep dropping out constantly
- Slower-than-expected speeds

Overall Review: As many others have said here, this router is awful. And it's even worse when you take into account its price-point.

I bought this router today to replace an older Asus I had and that had its 2.4Ghz band die pretty much out of the box. I had a terrible time working with Asus' customer support so I thought I'd switch to Netgear for my next router. Mistake!

Immediately after installing this router, I started having issues with it. First of all, the default network settings allowed me to connect to the router, but gave me no internet access. I had to factory reset the router and reconfigure things to get around that.

Then the real problems started to pop up. While I have 1Gbps/1Gbps service and used to get about 300mbps on my old Asus router, I can't even get half of that using this one. Plus, the connection seems fairly unstable and I often get speeds that are substantially lower than that.

Then for the most annoying of the problems... all of my devices keep disconnecting CONSTANTLY. Nothing stays online for more than a few minutes. A quick google search shows me that hundreds of people seem to be having this same issue and Netgear has no solution for it yet. I really should have read more reviews before committing this much money to this router.

Tested for a while and it's working great 11/30/2019 6:26:03 PM

Pros: -does what it's advertised to do
-covers large areas better than your cheap ISP router AND repeater
-WIFI 6 of course

Cons: I had some initial trouble setting up as a second router cause I had to adjust the MTU size. I was unable to connect to Netflix and the app was buggy also, BUT Just a quick youtube video on how to calibrate the MTU size to be compatible with my ISP and I was golden :)

Overall Review: Breaking free from my ISP's devices was just what I needed. App and router work great and I'm never looking back

Not all that 11/14/2019 9:17:00 PM

Pros: Has the multi band for guest and personal home.

Cons: This router has now started to cause many problems. Both bands are now slow on wifi and drop in and out. Clicking on a website now requires to wait for the action response. Web pages freeze or ask to wait or stop action. I upgraded from a fire hawk to handle the internet speed. Big failure.

Overall Review: I have checked everything on my system. I replaced the power supply, running 64 g of memory, bought a new wireless antenna. No improvement. If I connect to the cable modem directly it’s a super fast world. Save your money for now until something better comes along.

Worst product I've had in a while 11/14/2019 11:26:30 AM

Pros: fast

Cons: Their instructions for setup did not work.
The DHCP server kept changing my IP addresses.
Failed several time requiring a reboot.
I had to remove it from my network.

Overall Review: I would not tell people to buy this.

Returned 11/1/2019 9:08:01 AM

Cons: Did not seem to be an improvement over our old router. It kept disconnecting for some reason.
We lost money on it because we returned it for this reason but we just couldn't see keeping it if it didn't benefit us.

Overall Review: I would not recommend this product. We went with a different brand and it is excellent.

THIS is the router you're looking for! Incredible speed and no more dead spots 8/3/2019 2:03:16 PM

Pros: BLAZING fast! Looks sleek and very cutting edge. Fantastic signal throughout my entire home. No buffering. Easy setup. Getting faster speeds than what I am paying my cable company for! Quick and effective response from support.

Cons: I received the router just prior to a Netgear firmware update that, once it was installed, resolved the minor problems I initially had. A bit frustrating, but evidence that Netgear is listening and rolling out necessary updates quickly.

Overall Review: Let me start this by saying I am notorious for reading way too many reviews before buying anything, because I HATE the hassle of trying to return a product or troubleshoot it to make it work like it's supposed to.

I have played around with the settings for several weeks before posting this, just so I don't sound like a Netgear fan boy excited to open up a shiny new toy (although I admit my current modem and previous router are Netgear as well). This review is for anyone else, who is as OCD as I am, trying to decide whether this is worth the investment.

Straight out of the box, setup was a breeze. Antennas are housed inside the "wings" so you don't need to install/adjust them, worry about them breaking off, etc. Took no more than 10 minutes total to install, including 2 minutes to make sure the firmware was up to date. Ethernet cable comes included in the box so you won't need to purchase one.

Instructions are thorough too for anyone that isn't very tech savvy. Not sure if there is another way to set it up, but I used the Nighthawk app on my smartphone. Was intuitive and easy to use.

First thing I did after setup was go to the old dead spots in my house, but they were gone! I have full signal everywhere in my 3-story home and even in some areas outside.

This router has Smart Connect, but I personally choose not to use it. I sometimes opt to work outside in my backyard and like to manually control which band I am using. For those that don't know, 5Ghz bands do not travel as well through walls and will generally not extend signal as far as 2.4Ghz. Again, this is personal preference as I found the Smart Connect worked fine when it was on. For emphasis, I had no noticeable drop in signal when I was outside of my home ~150-200 feet away from my router whether I had Smart Connect on or off.

Similarly, there is an AX (wifi 6) mode that can easily be turned on or off. I imagine this mode is more for gigabit speeds, so I have that off for now as well. When AX mode was on, there was no difference (better or worse) in the speeds I was getting. Of course, the router works just as well with older wifi devices too.

I am currently using a DOCSIS 3.1 32x8 cable modem and paying for 150Mbps down/10Mbps up. In every speed test I have used, through my cable company's website or any 3rd party website, I consistently am getting 175-180Mbps download and 13-15Mbps upload *via Wifi*. I can't say if you will have the same results with a gigabit plan, but I feel confident when I eventually upgrade my internet speed this router will get the job done for many years to come.

I did have one minor issue for roughly 2 weeks from the time I initially began using the router, but it was quickly and easily resolved. I would be browsing the internet on my smartphone or laptop (both very recent hardware/technology) and maybe 2x/day, the signal would suddenly drop out for about 60 seconds. I kept getting a server error every time I tried to refresh the page. I checked with my ISP and confirmed that the issue was not with them. I had no clue what caused this as some of my other devices never experienced this interruption. I never needed to restart my router for it to begin working again either.

Long story short, I reached out to Netgear support (shoutout to Ray) and they were incredibly helpful! They had me re-install the latest firmware along with doing a factory reset and the problems were gone. No more drops in signal on any devices, and I have not had a single problem since. Although it was a bit annoying having to troubleshoot a new device, if I had started using the router 2 weeks later I anticipate I would have had the latest firmware from the start and never would have experienced this issue.

Had I posted the review then, I'd have given it a 4/5 simply because it was annoying to lose signal briefly while working. I am choosing to evaluate the router as it is with the current firmware because if you are reading this, that problem has been resolved from what I can tell.

This router was a dream come true! I had an older Netgear router that could not reliably handle the 20+ devices I have in my house and multiple people wanting to stream shows/movies all at once. I was barely getting 40Mbps with the outdated router so if it's time for you to upgrade, stop researching and just buy this one.

This is an excellent product, and I cannot praise Netgear support enough for their quick response and willingness to help me resolve the minor issue I had. I would highly recommend this product to any friends, family, or fellow review fanatics that are looking for a solid upgrade to their home network. The way I see it, you could buy an outdated router now and pay maybe half of what this router costs. Then once wifi 6 is rolled out in more devices, you'll be in the same position in 2 or 3 years wondering whether to upgrade. I chose to save myself the time and frustration of dealing with more research and investing in my network now for 5+ years.

Avoid 6/19/2019 5:46:10 PM

Pros: 5 lan ports
On paper it seems like a great router

Cons: Firmware is WAY to buggy, As i'm clicking the "review product" button the router stalls, loads a page not found error, then 5 seconds later loads the proper page. It has a weird delay and just drops connections for a short time. Called my ISP had them check their end twice and they show no errors with their equipment. Does not play well with smart home gear like smarthings v3 hub, chamberlain MyQ garage door hub or philips hue bridges, ring doorbell 2. They show disconnected, then reconnect for a while then disconnect again.

Overall Review: Perhaps firmware revisions will fix these problems but for now $400 for a premium product that doesn't work right is just absurd. At this price point it should be stable out of the box.

May be great for gaming, not for small business offices 6/16/2019 8:16:56 AM

Pros: Works fine some of the time

Cons: Gets overloaded with too many connections and hangs and needs to be rebooted
Port Forwarding entries disappear from the GUI and stop working
Netgear support absolutely terrible. Polite but so extremely unhelpful. Basically their response to everything was down rev the firmware and do a factory reset. Which was a major inconvenience me and only worked for a while. Until the router hung again

Overall Review: Router is probably fine for home use if you're a gamer. Definitely not for multiple users in a small office environment.
Netgear was a big disappointment. Their support experience was so unpleasant I will never purchase another Netgear product again.
