Does second device have to connect via Ethernet cable to TV/other or can it connect wirelessly to extend the signal from room that router is located in?

The 1st device has the router plugged into it via Ethernet cable and is plugged into an electrical outlet.  The 2nd device plugged into another electrical outlet in another room has to have an Ethernet cable from it to your device needing internet/network access.  They connect via the electrical wires in your wall.  If your device needing to connect to your network is wireless, there is no need for these unless your router's wireless signal is too weak to transmit signal
to the location of where you need access to your network/internet..

Question 2

I have 2 Netgear XAVB5101 adapters on a network. I want to buy 2 more adapters. 
Is the XAVB5201 compatible with these?

Yes. All the Netgear power-line adapters are Home Plug compliant and will operate together. The only thing to remember is that if you mix higher speed and lower speed adapters your throughput will be limited by the lower speed device. But then, unless you plug the 2 devices into the same outlet you're not going to get real world thru-put anywhere close to the device's rated speed anyway.

Is this product compatible with Apple OS X?

I use NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapters with Win 7 and Linux - it works with no problems. I have not used this with any Apple device but I cannot imagine why it would not work with device which runs OS X.

NETGEAR Powerline 500 Mbps Adapter works at the layer 2 (data link / network interface; Ethernet) of TCP/IP stack, so it will work with any network device which supports TCP/IP stack.
Apple OS X since its first release in 2001 included TCP/IP stack (Apple OS X is based on Unix).

What is included in this kit. One or two adapters? Any cables?

There are two adapters and two cables. You can assign names and addresses to these adapters from the Netgear app if you like. 
Tip: it seems that best performance is when the adapters are on or closest to the same electrical circuit in your circuit breaker panel as your router. I live in a home that is less than 10 years old and can move these adapters anywhere anytime I need to. It takes about a minute for the adapter to reconnect to the router. Depending on what electrical circuit it is on, I may see a drop of up to 50% transfer rate, which is still better than running a hard line to most routers.

Question 5

Does the adapter need to be plugged directly into the electrical outlet on the wall?  I'm short of outlets and would like to use one of those gizmos that you plug into one outlet and get multiple outlets, like 6.  Can I plug the adapter into one of the 6?  Thank you in advance for your answer.

I have mine plugged into the socket directly.  Reviews say the performance drops off when plugged into a multiple outlet power strip.  On my home theater I plug a power strip into the zyxel outlet and use it for the other equipment.  Everything works well.  Great system.   I have six in my house and we stream movies and have ethernet which is faster than wifi.  Highly recommended.

I'm interested in using the NETGEAR Powerline Adapter to get Internet from my house to my studio, which is a separate building 150 feet from my house. Electric power line runs from house circuit breaker box to studio, but studio has its own circuit breakers. Will product still carry Internet connection through second circuit breaker?

YES as long as its on same power meter and does not exceed the manufactures estimated distance between units.

I would like to extend the range of my XAVB52001 to an additional room what models are comapatable?

I have a two story house, my router is on the first floor , west end of the house, and I wanted to get wifi on the second floor, east end of the house, the Netgear 500 set up itself automatically, and is fast enough to stream Netflix well, with no glitches. It does what it says it does. I was skeptical because my house is 70 years old with old wiring, but it worked as advertised.  I don't know wahat models are compatable, I just have the two units that came in the box.

Pass through can also be used as power plug. Non-pass through block the power plugs.

It didn't work for me but I didn't spend that much time troubleshooting. It's supposed to be backward comparable but maybe the 85 is too far back

what is the difference between the xavb5201 and the xavb5602?

The difference is that the 5602 has a power-outlet that allows for the plug to be used.  The 5201 consumes an outlet.  the bandwidth is the same for these devices.
