It doesn't require an external power supply. It gets the power it needs through the HDMI cables. It does not come with HDMI cables so you will need at least two. One to connect to your display or television, and one for each device you plan to connect.

Can someone recommend a 5V DC adapter to power this?  My HDMI device is not kicking out enough power to power the switch

This switch worked well for my situation.  I connected PS3 and a Panasonic DVD/Home Theater unit that I use for Surround Sound to the switcher as I only had 2 HDMI ports on my LCD in the living room.  The other HDMI input was being used for a DVR.  Later, I added a PS4 as the 3rd switcher input.

The switch was able to read the power from the PS3 and PS4 well enough to turn on the Home Theater unit on for my sound source.  I'm very happy with the purchase.
