this is specifically the version for the 2011 socket, there is another version on newegg that has other brackets and may be compatible with the socket 1150. This only comes with the 2011 brackts.

does it fit in a mid case?

I will give you a measurement. From the bottom of my MB to the top of my Noctua 14, is 7 1/4 inches. There are some mid cases that this will not fit in. Don't forget to figure your MB stand offs.  You will have to get the inside measurement of the case you pick out. Call the manufacturer to get the measurement in the case. Good luck.

Question 3

It looks like there is room to attach a third noctua fan on this heat sink. Is that possible? If so, would I want to use a 120mm or a 140mm?

120. The 140 is the one in the middle. If you get a third one consider placing it elsewhere just in case. No pun intended :-). You will also have to find some mounting clips for the third fan. I don't think it would be worth it. Find another place in your case to help with airflow. This thing is huge. All the comments saying so will probably not really convince you until pull it out of the crate and try mounting it on your precious mobo atop a spendy chip. I have the Fractal R4 and I don't think it would be possible to put a third fan on it. And with the rear case fan being right there I dont think it would help that much. Make sure to measure and hit forums on your mobo you place this on. If you need to use your gfx card in pcie slot for 16x then this heatsink could easily get in the way. I had less that a quarter inch from the back of the card. In fear of shortcircuts I used shrinkwrap on the fan clips to insulate them. Good luck!

i would like to know if this cooler can fit a i7 4820k? i also heard that it takes up your ram space so should i just get 1 16g ram?

Hello Raymond,

I had problems with this cooler. The LGA 2011 mounting bracket mounted perfectly on my ASUS MBs,  but the cooler/fan assembly did not fit well to the mount. I got it to work by not fully tightening the mounting brackets, but felt that would lead to problems. Switched to CoolerMaster.  Admittedly they were not on the Noctua approved list I found out later so I would check that first.

And any RAM cards with cooling fins will be in the way (for ex G-Skill Ripjaws) - I removed the fins to fit. Best to use an MB with enough RAM slots clear of the cooler.

Question 5

I just installed this gigantic thing, and my BIOS only reads it as running at 400 rpm's. Did any of you run into the same problem? I plugged both fans into the Y connector, used the extension cord (not the "silent" cables) and plugged it into the CPU fan port. Did I do anything wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You're not going crazy and you didn't do anything wrong.  The CPU fan runs at a very low RPM.  And your processor is fine; this thing cools very well at those low RPMs.  Mine runs at just below 300 RPM at startup and my machine is cold.  I had to set my CPU fan warning detection at its minimum and it still gives me CPU fan errors on a cold day.

One fan power port, either 3- or 4-pin.  The kit contains a Y cable to connect the 2 fans to a single port.  4-pin PWM ports are supported.  You can also use a Molex to fan port adapter if necessary.

I recently picked up an Asus X79 Deluxe board with a 4960X chip.  I was wondering if anyone had any experience with that combination?  I've tried 4 different coolers so far an none of them have kept things as cool as I would like.  I'm a fan of Noctua, but would prefer not to buy yet another cooler that doesn't do what I need.  -- Thanks for whatever info you don't mind sharing.

Mine runs at ambient temp at idle and never goes over 50C under load with an i7 3820. It should do fine. Just make sure your case has space. It can also interfere with some ram sticks. Its a BIG cooler.

My case has 170mm clearance for a cooler, is that enough? The case is the Corsair Carbide Series Air 540.

I put mine in a full size tower and there was barely any clearance. I had to disassemble mine and remove one fan for clearence. Be mindful if you have large graphics cards or a top mounted radiator or fans in the case you specified. I'd suggest a smaller noctua just in case.

Size will it fit? Can anyone confirm this will fit properly within a Lian Li PC V1200 case? I am looking to upgrade and I think this cooler would be great addition to my system.

I think this would fit - I have not installed mine yet, but based on the Mother Board layout I worry about it overhanging the RAM.  I believe some reviewers removed the second smaller fan to overcome that problem.  I swapped the center fan for a similar Noctua fan in gray which was quite easy.  Can't say I'm a big fan of tan & brown
