Can this effectively cool an i7 6700k?

Well, it is compatible with the 1151 series, and it does work extremely well with the chip (which is an AMD A10 7800) I have. However, bearing in mind that the i7-6700k chip is unlocked and I assume you are looking at it with a view to overclocking, I personally would purchase this fan but spring for the additional second fan too. That would increase the fans potential to clear heat from the chip much more expediently.

Question 2

will this fit the LGA 1151 socket?

Yes it will. I believe this cooler came out before LGA 1151 so it's not listed. 1150, 1151, 1155, 1156 all have the same installation holes. Some new coolers will just list LGA 115X to cover all of them.

Question 3

Does this come with thermal compound or do i have to add it externally?

It comes with a tube of Noctua's own thermal compound that has to be added between the CPU and heat sink before you place the heat sink on the CPU. I used it and it has not given me any trouble, but normally I would have used Artic Silver.

Question 4

Can the fan on this be taken off and replaced with say, a different 92mm case fan from Noctua? I love their products but the colors are heinous.

I would have thought so. Providing the size and mounting holes are the same (which they quite probably are) I wouldn't think it would present a problem. And just a thought.....it's not the colour that is important, it's the performance and quality.

Where is the AM4 mount?

AM4 mounting hardware is not included you have to purchase separately. Need to get, "Noctua NM-AM4-UxS Mounting Kit for Noctua CPU coolers on AMD AM4 platforms".

Can be purchased on Newegg.

This is not one of the larger cooling towers I've had before so my assumption is it would fit.  If I were to use a Small/Medium/Large categorization of Cooling Towers I'd put this in the Medium sizing.  However, the proximity of your CPU Socket from the PCI-E slot your GPU is in has a factor in this as well.  And if it helps, even the Large cooling towers have never interfered with my GPU.  Sorry for the generalizations.

LGA 1700 mounting bracket included? My motherboard states it requires an LGA mounting bracket

Yes... it is now included.  In specific regards to LGA1700 the mounting-kit included was been included wit the cooler since 04/2022
For coolers bought before this date the mounting kit: NM-i17xx-MP78 (is free of charge when requested)

Not computer literate but is this an exhaust fan?

Accepted Answer

This replaces the cooler that ships with the CPU.  These fans are much larger, and this cooler has much greater fin area, so the thermal resistance of the cooler can be maintained with lower air flow, making your computer quieter.  Alternatively, you can expect greater performance from your computer (e.g. playing demanding games) before it reaches its maximum temperature and lowers the internal clock speeds ("throttles back").

How tall the the item from CPU to top of the heat sink/fan?  I am trying to put this in a SFF computer case.

Plan on an additional 25 mm depending on which Ram you use. I had to offset my fan away from the CPU a little bit in order to clear the ram
