Can this kit convert any monitor to 3d, or do you need a 3d monitor as well?

No, in fact it will not work with just any 3D monitor either, there is a list of compatible monitors on Nvidias website. Look under Products>>3d vision>>3D glasses and displays>>3D displays.

As an alternative If you have a 3D-TV already you might be satisfied with NVidias 3DTV play, It just consists of a downloadable program. If you have a compatible Nvidia video card it will work with a standard 3DTV and your own 3Dglasses. note: 1080p resolution is 24fps and 720p is 60fps, which is a limit of HDMI so you cant get around it. On top of that horizontal resolution is halved for both as the image for each eye is shared in one frame so resolution will suffer. It works, but you may be less than impressed with the results - read peoples comments and decide for yourself.

my monitor has the Nvidia 3d vision logo and the Nvidia G-sync logo, but I don't have a place on the monitor to plug in the vesa connector from the emitter. What's up with that?

The little pyramid cube sits on your desk with an unobstructed view of your body. You connect it with the included USB cable to your PC via a USB port. You then enable 3D in the Nvidia Control Panel and then go through the setup of pairing the glasses.

If I were you I would return it if you still can. This is an abandoned piece of 6 year old tech that nobody uses or develops for anymore. It doesn't look good anyway.

Can you use this with a regular LED monitor?

No. The kit has two parts: the glasses and the IR transmitter. In addition, you have to already have two other parts: The correct Nvidia video card and one of the few 3D monitors that are supported. You can tell that the monitor supports the glasses because the 3D Vision logo will be on the box (and the monitor).

In short, nope. Doesn't work with every monitor, LED or not.

I have one 3D system working with one pair of glasses. I would like to have a small group, 3 or 4 people viewing the same display at the same time. Can I simply buy more pairs of glasses? Is there a limit how many pairs of glasses the IR emitter can support?

From what I can tell, the IR emitter sends out a blanket signal, almost like a TV remote. All the glasses run on the same frequency. I just tested this with two of the 3d vision 2 glasses. My own and a buddy's. We could bboth see the 3d flawlessly. I have not tested 3-4, however I would imagine you could use as many as you want.

PS. All that was needed for my buddy to see the 3D was to turn his glasses on. No additional setup was needed for the second pair.

Yes, you need a 3d capable monitor and this kit in almost all instances.  The ASUS VG248QE is a great example of what you are looking for (its also a fantastic 2d monitor because of the 1ms response and 144hz option in 2d)

Stupid question but do you need to have a nvidia gpu to use this or do you just need a monitor that supports it?

You will need an Nvidia Graphics card capable of 3D Vision and you will need a 3D capable Monitor. Preferably a monitor that has a refresh rate of 120 Hz or more. A good monitor for this would be an Asus VG248QE (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236313). Just look for a monitor that has Nvidia 3D Vision Compatible.

Possible gift for my son.  He uses an apple computer and x-box.  Is it compatible and what else would he need for setting this up?

Unfortunately, it is not compatible with what he has. 3D Vision requires a PC running Windows Vista or above, a compatible video card, and a compatible monitor. It isn't compatible with an Apple PC and can't even be installed on an Xbox.

Is it  possible to use this wireless glasse with out a 3D vision USB IR?

Hey Bernard. No the glasses work in sync with the USB IR that plugs into your graphics card. From there it sends a signal to the 3d vision compatible monitor and somehow renders something amazing I'm told.  Just wearing the glasses without the hardware just makes them feel like a pair of lighty tinted sunglasses. I purchased this awhile back and found out the hard way and had to send it back.

There are other alternatives that nvidia makes that uses the older 3d technology like you see in theaters. Those just require the glasses I believe

How would this work if you have a multi-monitor setup?  Would you have to have an emitter for each monitor or just will one emitter work for all 3??

For one, all 3 monitors need to be 3D capable, Another, any blu ray you'll be watching will only play on one because of the fixed 1920x1080 ratio. If.you're using a game with 3D rendering, the one emitter runs through the computer which then displays through the monitors, I have never done this using more than one at a time. But I can switch to either monitor in 3D while watching a movie, so I assume it'd be fine. But I usually just watch movies on the middle screen and turn the other 2 off!
