I want to install lights that run on a battery, that way when my pc is unplugged or turned off, and opened, they will be turned on. The whole purpose of this is to of course not have the need for a flash light. If I get this product, would it have power from the pci slot even when unplugged? I'm going for a yes, however realistically i'm sure it's a no. But I thought i'd ask to be sure.

No, that wouldn't work... It doesn't use a PCI slot on the MB, just a slot in the case. It get power from a molex connector. I'm sure you could rig it to work with a battery if you wanted to. Over time the LEDs fade and wouldn't offer much light for service. Buy a hat with built in LEDs or a head lamp for hands free lighting.

How large in diameter is the light strip?

The cable's mesh is very flexible so the diameter can vary. It's average seems to be around 7mm with even the thickest being no more than 10mm or so.
