Question 1

For fastest data transportation for movies, would you recommend hooking it through the LAN line or wirelessly?

Accepted Answer

The short answer: If your internet connection is only capable of speeds less than 100Mbps (most are around 15 or 20 today) it doesn't really matter.  Use either connection.  You're probably fine either way.

The longer answer: Wireless G and Wireless B will not be faster than the wired connection, but Wireless N might.  But, it depends largely on the quality of the signal between your video streaming device (TV, HTPC, Roku, whatever) and this box.

If the signal quality is strong, wireless N is theoretically faster.  However, interference from other radio transmissions (think Microwave ovens and 2.4GHz phones) and other wireless routers can significantly reduce your wireless data rate.  It is more likely that you will have wireless N speeds comparable to the wired connection's 100Mbps than 150Mbps.

I personally prefer wired connections as they are usually more reliable.  If that is an option for you, go for it.  Otherwise, you should do just fine with wireless N.

does this work with comcast or xfinity?

This, like any wireless router, will work with any standard high speed internet connection (including XFINITY by Comcast).

This is NOT a cable modem. You will still need a cable modem (which Comcast would be happy to rent to you) in order to get internet access.

Question 3

Web-site indicates router supports Windows 8.  My network computers are running Windows 7 and Windows 10.  Will this router support those operating systems?

Connectivity will function just like any other router.  As long as the network settings allow for it, your computers will be able to talk for printing and folder sharing alike.

How did those who were able to get the Netgear firmware for the WNR612v2 to flash to this router? I have tried using TFTP and it fails to flash every time.

I just successfully flashed the WNR612v2 v. 1.0.0.3 firmware. I downloaded a TFTP executable linked from the netgear website. I plugged the router in and connected to my laptop via LAN. I changed the connection to a static IP address, 192.168.1.2, opened the TFTP executable, set the IP to 192.168.1.1, password as "password" and selected the firmware file.  I held reset button on the router for about 5 seconds, let go and immediately pushed "Upgrade" in the TFTP. It was successful on the first attempt. Hope this helps.

How is this wireless router for streaming movies on a broadband cable network?

likely fine...it works ok for us as a second wireless connection for video skype & facetime calls covering about 1 acre of greenhouse land area...linked to the main router via zyxel powerline adapters over ~250 feet of copper...given its price use can easily use it as a second access point if you do not like its performance for your primary need...

I want to use this as a wireless bridge.  Can I use this to connect to a current wireless network?

yes and if you can run an ethernet cable from lan port to lan port you do not need to use the built in unsecure repeater function...& you can keep the same security setting as on your main wireless router...we use it as a second wireless access point covering ~1 acre of greenhouse...just give it a fixed IP address, set the security & password to the same settings as on your current wireless & adjust the broadcast channel on this unit to be at least 3 channels away from the channel your current wireless broadcasts at, then connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on your current device to one of its regular LAN ports (not the WAN port) on this unit.  There are a couple good articles on the www with more details on this kind of setup if you need more detail...

How do I get mine to work with my wireless printer?  So far, it won't print share or allow file sharing like my last wireless router did.

That actually has to do with settings in windows and not really anything to do with the router. Your previous router worked because someone at sometime selected it was a private network and to enable network and file sharing but you haven't done that when you started this one.

The best way to learn how to create a network and enable file sharing is to google.

windows X enable printer and file sharing.

instead of X however insert your version of windows as it's slightly different for each version.

Alternately if you post it you can probably get help with your specific version, I can give you directions without knowing which specific windows your using though.

The OpenWRT 14.07-rc3 firmware "just works" (there might be a newer version by the time you read this). I can't link to the OpenWRT site here, but search for OpenWRT Download, find version Barrier Breaker/14.07 and go to the ar71xx/generic/ directoary, then download openwrt-ar71xx-generic-n150r-squashfs-factory.img
