Has this item been registered? Can I register with a brand new number on this refurbished item?

You register this as if new.  Pick a number from the available list of numbers to enroll.  Just follow the instruction sheet that comes along with the unit.  I also ported my old number as well. If you are thinking of purchasing the premium service call Ooma to get a better deal.

Question 2

Can you use it to send faxes?  at work we have one for our fax machine but I'm not sure if it's this model. Looks like it though.

The manual says that you can attach a fax machine to it using a splitter. However, you must attach it directly, and you can't just plug it into a phone jack in another part of the house because the Ooma doesn't use your traditional phone wires. So, in my case, my multi-function printer/fax in another room is no longer usable. I would have to bring it down next to the Ooma, which is next to my cable/internet modem, in order for it to work.
