US Stamps 2021 Mid-Atlantic Lighthouses American Lighthouses Series 5 Sheets of 20 Picture the last lighthouse illustrations made by renowned stamp artist Howard Koslow for the USPS Part of the popular Lighthouses stamp series Why the stamps were issued: To celebrate the beauty and history of lighthouses in the Northeast United States. About the stamp designs: Each stamp pictures an illustration by Howard Koslow of a different lighthouse: Thomas Point Shoal, Maryland; Montauk Point, New York; Harbor of Refuge, Delaware; Navesink, New Jersey; and Erie Harbor Pierhead, Pennsylvania. Koslow was also the artist for past issues of the Lighthouse series. The mid-Atlantic lighthouses were the last illustations he created for the Postal Service. First Day City: The First Day of Issue Ceremony took place at the Twin Lights Historic Site in Highlands, New Jersey. About the American Lighthouses Series: The American Lighthouses Series began in 1990, with each stamp design picturing artwork created by Howard Koslow for the USPS. Each set has represented a different geographic region of the United States. This series honors the historic importance and beauty of our nations lighthouses as well as the value of preserving them for generations to come. While many still exist, countless others have been lost to the ravages of time. Those that remain are precious heirlooms that must be protected. And no one believes that more than the Lighthouse Preservation Society. The Lighthouse Preservation Society is a non-profit organization focused on saving Americas remaining lighthouses from destruction. As of 2021, the organization had been around for over 35 years, during which time it became a leading advocate for lighthouses nationwide. The society has brought up issues at Congressional hearings, conferences, and more. The society has also sponsored National Lighthouse Day and raised millions of dollars for hundreds of lighthouse renovation projects. The society has also nominated 30 US postage stamps honoring lighthouses. In 2021, the USPS issued five Forever stamps picturing Mid-Atlantic lighthouses. These stamps bring lighthouses to public attention and remind us all that these beautiful and antique structures are pieces of our nations history we all need to fight to save.
