Morakniv is a family-owned company, founded in 1891 and today run by a board with an external CEO. A Morakniv is always made in Mora. In our factory in Östnor, we combine 135 years of knife-making tradition with modern production to create knives used all over the world.
How a Morakniv is made
Every Morakniv is made in our factory in Östnor, just outside Mora, Sweden, and has been since 1891. Here, more than 130 years of knife-making tradition is combined with modern technology. Because we oversee every step of the process—from the first press to final packing—we can ensure lasting quality. Take a look behind the scenes.
Steel - The Heart of the Knife
It all starts in the steel storage. We use several grades of steel, each selected for a specific purpose. Our Swedish stainless steel is strong, durable, and resistant to corrosion. We also use high-carbon steel from Germany and France. The French carbon steel is laminated, with a high-carbon core and softer carbon steel on the outer layers, providing excellent toughness and long-lasting edge performance.
Our Grinds & Edge Angles
Grinding is one of the most important steps in knife manufacturing. A precision-ground edge helps deliver consistent cutting performance and durability. At Morakniv, generations of knife-making experience have evolved from traditional hand grinding on large whetstones to modern CNC-controlled, robot-assisted grinding systems designed to provide consistent precision and quality.
Knife History in Mora, Sweden
For more than 400 years, knife-making has been a natural part of life in Mora and Dalarna, with roots reaching back to the Iron Age. Here, an entire culture of blacksmithing, trade, and craftsmanship took shape – from small farm forges to factories that spread knives around the world. This is the story of how Dalarna, and the village of Östnor in particular, became the hub of Swedish knife history.
