- The maximum file capacity that can be transferred in FAT32 format is 4GB. (If the file to be transferred exceeds 4GB, you need to format exFAT or NTFS on the computer first.)
Why is the actual capacity less than advertised?
Different algorithms between computer systems and manufacturers, as well as reserved space and firmware taking up some of the capacity.
· Manufacturer Defines: 1KB = 1000 bytes, 1MB = 1,000,000 bytes, 1GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes.
· Computer Defines: 1KB = 1024 bytes, 1MB = 1,048,576 bytes (1024*1024), 1GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (1024*1024*1024)
Example:
USB flash drive labeled 64GB (decimal):
Actual binary capacity = 64,000,000,000 ÷ 1,073,741,824 ˜ 59.6 GB
Therefore, it is normal for Windows to show a USB drive that is 90% of the advertised capacity.
