I have two of this model, one from Newegg, one from another site that starts with an A. Both came with a Displayport 1.2 cable.

No, this is a  VA (Vertical Alignment) panel, it still has great viewing angles like an IPS, but it is a different technology. Also According to most articles they tend to have the worst refresh times of IPS, TN, and VA display types.

I think its around 4 or 5, one website says 3, but not sure how much i would trust it. The refresh rate is pretty good on them though

I have a Nvidia GPU so I will need to use the v-sync to lock it in at the monitors refresh rate.  Is it able to  set the refresh rate to something other than 144hz?  Maybe 60,75,100, or 120hz?  That way I can use V-sync to get it as close to the GPU's output as possible depending on what game I'm running at the time?   Thank you for any help/info

That is correct. You can manually set the refresh rate of the monitor. Please refer to your graphics card user manual or by going to the manufacturers website to get information regarding refresh rate settings.

Can you disable the built in speakers if you want to use your own sound system?

Sure. Just go to the windows sound selection and choose which ones you want. It's just a nice additional speaker.

IT says VESA Compatible, but there are no mounting ports in the picture above?

What you dont see in the picture is a mount adapter that plugs in where the stand is in the picture. it attaches and then you can VESA mount easily.
