What is Diaper Rash?

Diaper rash is a common skin irritation of early childhood. When skin remains wet for too long, it begins to break down. Moisture from a diaper can harm your baby’s skin and make it more prone to chafing. When this happens a diaper rash may develop. Other causes of diaper rash include introducing new foods, using new brands of diapers, wipes, laundry detergent, etc., or using antibiotics.

Identifying Diaper Rash

Diaper rash usually shows up as a patch of pinkness or redness, and scaling skin where the diaper meets baby’s bottom. A bad case of diaper rash usually causes pimples, blisters and other sores on your baby’s buttocks, thighs or genital area. If the rash gets infected, it may be swollen and turn bright red. Be sure to call your doctor if the rash spreads to other areas, it gets worse or does not go away in 2-3 days, or if your baby develops a fever.

Preventing/Treating Diaper Rash

There are three main things you can do to keep diaper rash from happening:

1. Clean your baby’s bottom between diaper changes with plain warm water, avoiding scented wipes and soaps.
2. Let your baby’s skin dry before putting on another diaper or let their bottom air dry.
