Seamlessly converts between Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, and Modbus ASCII protocols. Allows Modbus TCP masters to communicate with Modbus RTU/ASCII slaves, and Modbus RTU/ASCII masters to communicate with Modbus TCP slaves/servers.
1 x software-selectable serial port (DB9 male connector for RS-232, and terminal block for RS-422/485).

15 kV ESD protection for all serial signals. Optional 2 kV optical isolation (available on "-I" models like MGate MB3170I) for enhanced protection against electrical interference and ground loops.
2 x 10/100BaseT(X) RJ45 Ethernet ports with auto MDI/MDI-X. Built-in Ethernet cascading functionality with a single IP address. This allows you to daisy-chain multiple Modbus gateways (or other Moxa devices with this feature) together, reducing the need for additional Ethernet switches and simplifying network cabling
1.5 kV magnetic isolation protection for Ethernet. Also available in fiber optic models (e.g., MGate MB3170-M-SC, MB3170-S-SC) for extended transmission distances (multi-mode up to 4 km, single-mode up to 40 km) and immunity to EMI.
Can operate simultaneously as Modbus TCP Client (Master) and Modbus TCP Server (Slave). Can operate simultaneously as Modbus RTU/ASCII Master and Modbus RTU/ASCII Slave.
Supports connecting up to 32 Modbus TCP clients/masters or to 32 Modbus TCP slaves/servers. Supports up to 31 or 62 Modbus RTU/ASCII slaves on the serial port.
