is this a cordless unit that I can walk away from the base and use?

Yes, in fact it has a pretty good range (at least in the country).  I can usually get about 75' from the house.  I've had my current unit for years and the only trouble I've ever had is when the battery begins to die.

Question 3

Does it have an intercom capability?  I.e. Can two of these talk to each other directly?  If not, what model do you recommend?

I have just the one unit, but there is an "intercom" button on the dial pad.   The user guide states, 
"The dial pad supplied with your phone can be registered to a total of four different CT14 bases, and the base supports a total of six cordless dial pads.   Features like intercom, conferencing and transferring are only available if you have multiple units"

It also gives a resource "tab" at the Plantronics website which I can include because of Newegg restrictions.

Is the headset phiscally attached to base by a wire?  How is the quality of the sound?

The headset plugs into the phone, not the base.  The base is plugged in to the AC and the phone jack and is used just for charging.

Is this the only cordless unit with headset used off a land line?

You mean are there other brands available out there?  I think so.  I only use Plantronics CT14.
