Question 1

OK have built my new rig and am waiting for the OEM copy of Win10. In the meantime, have a question about installing the video card (Asus GTX 980 Ti) into the #4 slot - PCIe 3x16/8_3. Currently have only one video card, but will probably get another and SLI. I found that installing it in the #1 slot, it is too close to the DDR4 slots for me to install the Corsair RAM coolers on top of the DIMMs. I plan to oc (which is why I bought this mobo and Corsair Vengeance 3000 DDR4.

So my question is - will putting a single video card into the #4 slot impact performance? Manual is unclear - just states x16/x8 in SLI mode.

Accepted Answer

I have the same setup as you. GTX-980 Ti, 3000 Corsair RAM and that Rampage V motherboard. And I had the same question as you but mine was more performance related. I also have an OCZ Revo 350 PCI based SSD. So I was concerned about using the optimal slots for max bandwidth. I looked at the manual for advice and it has lots of facts but not much info. So I asked ASUS tech support, and they recommended that I read page 16 and 17 of the manual, which I already had, which is why I contacted ASUS tech support. Reminds me of the joke about the pilot flying in the fog in Seattle but is able to do a pinpoint landing after Microsoft tech support gives him accurate but useless information (tells him he's in a plane when he asks where he is.). Asus tech support is giving Microsoft a run for their money in terms of useless info.

At first I put my 980 Ti in slot 1 (X16) because I didn't use the fans on my RAM, and my SSD is in slot 3 (X16). Everything worked fine and it was fast but I swapped things to see if it would make a difference. So I ended up with the SSD in slot 1 (X16) and the 980 TI in slot 3 (X16/X8_3). It didn't seem to make any difference as far as performance tests or day to day handling, so I just left it that way. So putting your 980 Ti in slot 3 shouldn't be a problem.

But wow, it would be really nice if ASUS could offer some simple advice on optimal slot usage rather than a bunch of down in the dirt details about the design implementation of the slots that doesn't make much sense to a day to day user like us.

Not to bash on ASUS too much... it's a great motherboard.

Question 2

Does this come with an io shield?

Accepted Answer

Yes it does, I'm not sure of a board that doesn't come with an IO shield, it's a chrome looking shield. Very nice.

Question 3

What computer case will take advantage of all the outputs of this motherboard?

Accepted Answer

I had a hard time with that. There are a lot of cases out there. I built PCs in a lot of cases and i find that the professional feel of Lian-Li is my pick for all around quality and functionality for my PC. Take your time and pick the one you need to fit your devices. One thing to think about is this mother board only has one usb 2.0 header and they want you to use it for the Q-Connector. in the specs it says 1.5 usb 2.0 what the hell does that mean. It is a good mother board for a high end PC but I had to buy a bunch of custom adapters so i could hook up my front panel after market temp and fan control, and my card readers. The board it self has the ability to control all of your fans and monitor your temps but i like to see it externally on the front. I guess start by counting how many devices you want to put in the front of your case then figure out how you are going to hook them up then pick the case to fit them all. If you have the money and the space at your desk then i would get this one LIAN LI PC-D666WRX Black/Red Aluminum Computer Case. I bought mine a year ago so mine is the older one that doesn't have the side plastic, the red color inside, and it has fewer 5.25 bays. if you want a lot of hard ware this is the one. I fit two liquid coolers in mine one for my graphics card and one for my CPU. My CPU cooler is two 140mm fans. I would say just Make sure you get a "full tower" at least for any build involving this motherboard. Have fun!

Question 5

Would this board accept 4 sticks of 16 GB of ram for a total of 64 GB? Thanks and hope to hear from you soon!

Accepted Answer

According to the User Guide, "You may install 2GB, 4GB and 8GB unbuffered and non-ECC DDR4 DIMMs into the DIMM sockets." There are eight (8) sockets, so to get 64GB you would have to use eight (8) 8GB memory modules (not four (4) 16GB modules).

Question 6

Does anyone have Windows 10 running on this board?

Accepted Answer

Yes, I run win 10 with this board and lucky for me there has not been any MOBO issues. I just hate do purchase anything from any company with a reputation, for poor customer service, as ASUS.
I had to have it because of the many features. :-)

Question 7

Can this board support more than one external monitor? I would like to have three external monitors connected, but only see one video port on the board.

Accepted Answer

The board can support about anything on earth. However, the issue of multiple monitors lies in the area of the GPUs. This board doesn't have the onboard video as previous boards do. In fact, I am embarrassed to admit that I spent quite some time searching for the video output before installing the video card as I like to get it to boot before getting creative. It is quite a complex board, however, with gimmicks that nobody needs except a dedicated, wise, video game addict. I love Asus boards but, if I had it to do over, I would get the X99 Deluxe and spend the money on the 5960X CPU...

Question 8

Does this board have built in Bluetooth?

Question 9

Hi, Can I use my old CPU Intel Core i7-3970X Extreme Edition Sandy Bridge-E 6-Core 3.5GHz (4.0GHz Turbo) LGA 2011 in this Board?

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately you can't use the older Sandy Bridge CPU's with Intel X99 chipset motherboards. Mostly Intel X99 boards use the newer Haswell-E CPU's that require LGA 2011v3 (revision 3). Your Sandy Bridge CPU uses the X79 chipset which isn't compatible with LGA 2011v3. For your particular CPU (if you don't plan on upgrading it) you want to look for a X79 chipset motherboard with LGA 2011 Socket, NOT LGA 2011v3. There is a comparable motherboard to the Rampage V Extreme for your CPU. The motherboard is called the "ASUS Rampage IV Black Edition" and can be found here at Newegg as well.

Question 10

Quick Question. I bought this Motherboard with G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 series 16GB (4 x 4GB) 288-Pin Model F4-3000C15Q-16GRR.
I was scanning through the Asus manual and came upon RAM compatibility page. So I looked for the 3000 section, and found out only two are listed. G.SKill F4-3000C16Q-16GRR and F4-3000C16Q-32GRR. Seeing as how the RAM I bought is so close, I'm worried I won't be able to get the 3000 setting because of it. Anyone with experience or help? Thanks!

Accepted Answer

If it is any help to you, I installed the F4-3000C15q-16GRR, with no problems at all. You probably won't get the full 3000MHZ, more like 2400. I have another pc with the same Mother Board, and I used a Ripjaw 3300 MHZ 4x4GB set, both worked with no issues. The set you are inquiring about is much cheaper than the 3300MHZ one and does the same thing. I was pissed when I found it so much cheaper than the 3300. I don't think you will get the 3000 setting out of any of the Memory you use. the best I've gotten is about 2400MHZ, and I don't think it has to do with what the Manual says. This board has a lot of tweaking capabilities. I am sure if you want to test your abilities, you can get to those speeds. I like the cheaper one, because it has lower timings, and from what I've read, you will probably benefit more from that than trying to get the highest MHZ's. Hope I was of help to someone, I know I have read many reviews and I thank everyone that has contributed.
