I have a HP H8-1234 with a M3970AM-HP motherboard. Will this video card work this motherboard?

You can look at the specs on your system at HP's site (I can't link to them because newegg won't let me) and see that your motherboard should be fully compatible but your power supply is not. You have a 300 watt power supply but the minimum is referenced as 400 watt, 450 watt recommended. You might be able to get away with a 300 watt supply if you don't run any peripherals and only use an SSD but I wouldn't try it, I would just upgrade the power supply to something like 600 watt or better and if you end up building a new system you could always reuse it.

im building a low budget VR machine, like fantastic contraptions and virtual desktop, will this card be able to handle it?

When building VR I'm going to assume you want to use a resolution higher than 1920x1080 yes? If so, forget this card immediately. Even some of the highest end cards may have trouble with sustaining smooth framerates while at higher resolutions, depending on the game. I don't know exactly what you're going to be building but just remember this is just a budget card with 2 GB of RAM. Even double the RAM won't save you. If you want a great card for a very decent price look at the RX480.

Can I use this card without having a 6 pin connector? Will it perform simply off motherboard power

Correction - It depends on your system. I just double checked by unplugging the 6 pin connector and got NO OUTPUT (blank screen) from the video card.

Is this card actually 9.37 inches or is that just a mistake? How long is this card.
