Does this scanner have to be plugged in at all times in order to use it?  Does it have to be connected to the computer for use?

Yes. This scanner emulates a "keyboard". So it needs to be connected to get power and to send the "keys" back to the computer.
However, one thing I noticed is that the laser doesn't stay on all the time. The scanner has a sensor that allows it to turn off the laser and when you put something in front of it, it will turn the laser on again to read the barcode.

I am looking for a barcode reader that I could use to record results of a 5 K race.  Would this be what I am looking for?  If so how are the barcodes recorded, in a data base?  If so do I need software?

They don't have to be in a database.  You will need software but it can be anything that recognizes an input device, e.g. keyboard, mouse, barcode reader.  So, for example, if you have Excel open and on a cell, you scan a barcode and the barcode reader will put the barcode in the cell.  Same thing for Access and putting it in a field, Word putting it on a line.  For results of a 5 K race, I would think you would want a database.  Depending on what you want to do with the results, this could simply be Excel or Access if you want to do some more complex.  Hope this helps.

not that i know of, i bought it for a small retail store. i guess it all depends on what software your using it with, we used it with a PC america POS software and it just has the basic scanning ability. hope it helps:/

Will this scanner work with a Chromebook?

I don't know about Chromebook, but it does work with a PC using Microsoft Word or Excel. It also works with Notepad. It also works with Microsoft Edge browser.

Does it have a " keyboard wedge" mode and can it output "enter"or "return" key after each scan?

It can definitely have a Carrier Return programmed. Not sure about keyboard wedge mode. You may want to refer to the owners manual. It is available on the manufacturer's website. We go through a ton of barcode scanners and I used to purchase WASP and Motorola ones that were anywhere from $90-$130 each. This one works just as good if not better and is a fraction of the cost. Highly recommended.

Can this be used to scan barcodes on wine bottles?I have a wine cellar of about 300 bottles.Also,would it enter info into my Wine Curator program?

Can I pull the barcodes I read into a simple database or spreadsheet such as Access or Excel?

Yes.  We use it that way to populate serial numbers in to spread sheets.  Simply plug in the scanner, open your spread sheet and highlight the cell or cells you want populated and then start scanning.  It will automatically progress to the next cell after each scan.  All the software needed for the scanner is built in to windows.

5 feet. Works great, does everything it's supposed to do, however the cord can sometimes be a nuisance.  Should have gone with a wireless.
