SAMSUNG 970 EVO?

I have a Samsung 970 Evo that I'm using in this adapter, and it seems to work the majority of the time. I don't know if it's the hard drive or the adapter, but occasionally my computer will boot up without it recognizing the hard drive. Then I'll boot it up again later or the next day, and it recognizes it. I have not figured out why it's hit-and-miss. One thing is for sure, it is frustrating that it doesn't work 100% of the time.

So this fits in the PCIe x16 slot and adds an M.2 interface for an SSD?

Yes it does... you can mount an M.2 SSD and slide it in any x4,x8,or x16 slot... I put and Samsung 970 Pro 512G in mine...Now the question to you is what Mother board are you putting this in???
I have a Asus crosshair Formula5-Z which I had to mod the BIOS to get it to run... 
If you have a motherboard which supports PCIe 3.0 you should NOT have a problem!!!
