Does this accept 2.5" drives?

Absolutely.
I currently have Western Digital blue ssds installed (although red would have been better) and they mount via the included enclosure trays.
Syncing with these drives is incredibly fast as well. Buffalo informed me it would likely take 24-36 hours. It took 8.

Which drives, specifically, should be purchased to go with this?ch drives should be used with this?

I used WD red plus, they were fine. However even RAID can fail.  I have a Seagate back up plus for redundancy in my SOHO.
