APPLICATION

- Parallel to the degrees scale a further groove is milled with two scales for mitre (compound) cuts.
- The upper one is for hip rafters (labelled HIP-VAL on the square) and the lower one is for common rafters (labelled COMMON on the square).

- Place the lip side against the board and pressed against it at the pivot point (labelled PIVOT on the square). The other end is rotated away from the edge of the board until the edge and the desired angle are congruent. Now the saw cut can be marked. Note that you will always cut along the complementary angle.
- If the angle at the edge is 30° then the angle you will mark will be 60°.

- Set the pivot at the edge of the board and then rotate the square around that point until the edge of the board aligns with the correct mark on the "Common" scale - marked in red in the picture.
- Then draw a line along the ruled side of the square.

- The diamond cut out used to square a line that is drawn across the board to allow you to then make a 90-degree line perfectly from your line to the edge of the board.
- If you need to find the level of a surface but, for some reason, you do not have a bubble level, you can improvise with the rafter square and a plumb-bob.
