Does this work with other routers besides ASUS out of the box?

Yes. It will work with most routers, for best security you would want to make sure your router can do wpa2. I used both the Windows wireless setup and the Asus. The Asus setup gave you more options but I ended up letting Windows handle it because i don't like too many programs running. Drivers where stored on the unit so setup was easy, i am running Windows xp.

do i need to use a disk to use it with my pc?

To install the adapter you need to either install the software from the provided disk or from the manufacturer website. The adapter does not require a disk except for the above mentioned.

Would this work for my desktop to connect to the wifi at my apartment?

Yes, this would allow your desktop to connect to any wireless router within reach.  However, before you purchase this, ask yourself what your primary use of the internet is?  If you are a simple Netflix regular/browser/email person who doesn't stray far from your router this is ideal.  If you stream Netflix HD/play online games/torrent or would like to "borrow" another neighbors Fios or Cable internet signal (with their permission ;)  you may wish to find something with larger antennae.  If you fall into the later category, I would recommend something like this Rosewill RNX-N180UBE Wireless Adapter IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 1T2R / 5 dBi External Antenna (although another brand perhaps).

Yes this device is Microsoft Windows 7 compatible.  I have been using it on 7 for a while now and it works great.  Just have an N wireless router for the full potential of this device.

It will work on XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10. It will likely not work with anything older.

I want to get an inexpensive wireless adapter for my Uebo M200 media player.

The description for the adapter on the manufacturer's website (which costs twice as much) says:

Will this cheaper alternative work just as well?

I used this adapter and it didn't work very well for me, it had problems connecting to my computer and when it did, would not recognize my router. And no, I don't have problems with computers in general, this was a one off, and I've never been more unhappy with a product in my life.

I have a computer with windows 7 and 8 and it works with them both. You will get a disk with it to download the drivers to your system.
