My 11 year old looking for a laptop for gaming like minecraft and steam. I'm sure they would both work on this laptop but would it work at a fast speed? Considering that we have a fast home wifi

Graphics wise it would run on medium settings.  Depending on distance from router you may experience some lag.  My 13 old plays steam and minecraft  as well and doesn't experience any issues.  If you haven't had Windows 8 before, than expect a learning curve and some frustrations figuring out somethings.

Is the battery replaceable and upgradeable?

Far as i know yes the battery is removable there for i am sure you can replace it. As far as up grade able you will need to do a search on the net for a replacement and see if they offer a upgrade for the battery.

I received mine today, but instead of 750 GB it is 279 GB...did I get the wrong one?  And the keys are sticking... I have to hit the space bars and keys hard to not just have one word or missing letters.

Under typical use, my battery life is about 3.5-4 hours, and this is the ONLY real drawback for this system.

It is, though not for the faint of heart. The SODIMM inside looks to be pretty well standard, though I'm a little worried about pulling it out to see how easy it is without a replacement.

Yes. Finding a laptop without WiFi is kinda difficult in the past couple of years.

The drive says it's a DVD RW and I've written a backup to a DVD once so far.
