Is this model (TMB113-M-6826) actually fanless?  Acer's site suggests that it IS fanless, but all the photos show the usual HSF vent on the left side.

Nope sorry it does have a fan, it will only get real wound up under very heavy load. But when browsing the Internet you can't even tell.

Question 2

Hello, So far I think I want this machine.  BUT.  I asked NewEgg if it could be downgraded to Windows 7 and they said they don't do that.  My tech is tring to research *which* Windows 7 to use (which is beyond my paygrade, as i'm technoklutz, technophobe, and techno-challenged).  Does anyone have any comment about downgrading this to a W7 (some programs hard to replace)?  Thanks all for the great info on Samsung SSD and adding 8 GB to make 16gb!  Very helpful.

win 7 64 bit, would run.   so would win7 32 bit, but you would only be able to access half the ram (2 gb limit on 32 bit os)

Does this come with a CD Drive?

No, there's no cd or dvd drive in this notebook. You would have to hook up an external one via USB.

Two questions:

1. How is the screen brightness and contrast?  Seen a full review on the system online and it looks like it will be close to my old Asus HE1000 netbook.  Not as good, but close.

2. Battery life?  Seen some reviews that talk about how bad the battery life is.  Heard roughly 2 hours.  Old Asus HE1000 consistently gets 4-5 hours.  Seen some get the larger battery.  Curious what the weight and life is on that one.

Like others I'm really looking for a replacement to my netbook which has been an awesome computer but getting slower and slower.

1, I got this as an upgrade to my 2009 macbook pro and the screen is definitely a downgrade, but not unexpected. I wanted to get something smaller and more powerful and got both. The only real drawback is the narrow range that it must be tilted for that perfect looking picture, again, not unexpected but the only serious adjustment I've had to deal with. Watching TV and Movies looks great for the screen size, but again I don't have much to compare it to.

2, Battery life depends a lot on what I'm doing. It's great when I'm browsing, reading, or typing papers, but with gaming or streaming, 2 hours seems about right. I haven't tested the real limits of the battery yet (right now it tells me it has 5 hr/ 7 min left at 94%), but I'm happy with it because the battery on my old laptop was dying and its charge lasts about an hour.

Acer said that Windows 8.1 PRO can be downgraded to Winows 7.  Does this machine have Windows 8.1 PRO or just Windows 8.1?

Just windows 8.1, I did upgrade mine to pro because I needed to get it on the network.

I installed 2 8 GByte modules:

Crucial 8GB 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model CT102464BF160B

to take the device to 16 GBytes. I also installed a Samsung SSD and a double size 4400 mAh battery. Nice system.
