What's the difference between an HDD and an SSD, and which one do I need?
The Facet is a hard disk drive (HDD) — it uses a spinning mechanical disc to store data. HDDs offer more storage capacity at lower cost than SSDs, making them suited to backups, game libraries, photo and video archives, and document storage.
Will the Facet work with my PS5, Xbox Series X, or older consoles
Yes. The Facet works with PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. PS5 and Series X/S games can be stored on the Facet but must move to internal storage to play. PS4 and Xbox One games run direct from the drive. Smart TVs with USB are supported.
Do I need to reformat the drive before I use it?
No. The Facet ships pre-formatted in exFAT and works with Windows, macOS, PlayStation, Xbox, and Smart TVs out of the box. Reformat to NTFS for Windows-only, APFS for Mac-only, or FAT32 for older devices. Reformatting erases all data on the drive.
What's included in the box, and do I need to buy a separate cable?
Everything you need is included: the ModusTech Facet hard drive, a USB-C to USB-C cable with a tethered USB-A adapter, and a quick start guide. The cable connects to modern and older devices without buying anything extra.
How fast is the Facet in real-world use?
The Facet uses a USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface (5Gbps) with a 7200 RPM HDD. Real-world transfer speeds reach up to 100MB/s — the typical sustained ceiling for a 2.5-inch HDD. As a reference, 50GB of photos backs up in around 8 minutes.
