Cat7 (Twisted Pair of 7th Category) is a newest cable standards for Ethernet and other interconnect technologies. It was developed with strict specifications on cross talk and EMI protection and features four individually shielded pairs as well as an overall cable shield to protect the signals from crosstalk and EMI. Cat7 cable provides a copper solution for 10-Gigabit Ethernet at 325ft (100 meters) but laboratory testing has successfully shown its ability to transmit up to 40Gb at 165ft (50 meters) and even 100Gb at 50ft (15 meters).
The ability to support the higher frequencies allows Cat7 cable to carry more data and support frequencies of up to 600Mhz. Also this cable offers extensive shielding to reduce signal attenuation and is relatively stiff in comparison to previous generations of cabling. The shielding needs to be grounded and Cat7 also requires special Rj45-Grounded connectors.
