Can you use the light without a laptop? Also, can you select a single color and use that color and stead of using the multiple color-changing?

I know your question is a year old and that you probably moved on from this desk. However, I am receiving my desk today and I will update my answer to your question. As far as I can tell, this desk's RGB lighting is powered through your PC's USB port. It's a low energy consuming technology, so I would imagine that if you attempted to use a wall outlet with a USB plug, it may fry the circuitry.
