Can this system be laid on its side? It seems the air flow and component heat transfer is pretty well designed, but does it have to stand upright to stay cool?

The cooling system is designed to draw air from directly under the system and vent the hot air out the top. The bottom of the system is curved for this exact reason. So no. I don't recommend that you lay it on its side.

P.S.: As I look at it right now the machine also has an angular difference between two halves of each side plate. Actually getting it to lay on its side would be very difficult.

is the keyboard mechanical?

I bought this for my son, and to the best of my memory no.  I have the razer chroma , and there is a distinct click with each key press.. this keyboard didn't have it.

I can run War Thunder on medium to high settings. Lag is minimal on high settings. Runs best on the medium settings.

This PC can run fallout 4 very well. Although it runs on a fine line of quality and performance. If you run everything on ultra you will have around 15 fps. I just turned shadow detail down to medium and run around 30 fps. But if you intend to heavily mod fallout or build massive bases like I have. You'll definitely want to find something with more than 8gb of ram or upgrade this pc. I have not looked into this machine to see if I can add more ram so I couldn't be much help with telling you if it's upgradeable. Hope this helps.

so ive heard that this doesnt come with both power supply cords for the 180 and the 230  so how much extra and how hard is it gonna be to find the extra cable u have to buy ?

True this model only has the one power adapter. It only needs one. The only reason you would need the other would be for the upgraded graphics card. You would have to call Asus to purchase the power adapter, but it won't make a difference on the current system setup. It's a great machine, leave it be. If you think you can do better, try building your own, you won't be saving any money.

Why would you want it without the graphics card? If you are thinking of installing a different card... Good luck. This system is highly compact. Also if you upgrade the card then you will need another power supply for that card. You would have to get that through Asus. TIP: If you want to tinker around this pc is not for you.
