Can you use the A/C mode without the window install kit?

You will need to have the exhaust hose sending the heat somewhere out of the room .. whether its using the window kit or a hole in the wall (j/k .. not recommended).

If you try to operate it without the exhaust hose and just have the hot exhaust flowing back in to the room, you will eventually end up heating your space than cooling it down cause those dang humans have still not figured out how to build a machine with over 100% efficiency.

Question 2

at what fan speed do you use to activate the evaporation system? Is it ever necessary to drain the unit?

I am sorry as I do not know the answer to the fan speed question. I run it at high in cooling mode as this is only a backup for me at the moment.  As far as draining I would say if you use it in a fairly himid area like me in the the southeast then you will need to drain it quite often. However, this is trial and error for your climate. The device is supposed to have a sensor that will let you know when it is full and needs draining. I would monitor it for a while when first using it to see if it trips the sensor. If you live in a very humid area you may want to run it and at the end of a day or a few days drain it to see how much water it stores. I run mine for a few hours in very humid conditions and it stored close to 8oz. of water.
