Are waterproof?

No, it's only Water Resistant meaning that it can be raining and if your out in the rain for 30+ minutes, the contents won't get wet..  But for about $5-6 you can get a can of  Water Repellant Spray,  that will make it WaterProof, you have to respray it every year or when you Machine wash the pack...

How is the construction of this bag? Will it hold up after prolonged use?

This backpack is the best I have ever bought. It is very durable, has a great deal of room for my computer, books and even my medications. Comfortable to carry, too. The shoulder straps are sturdy, adjustable and wee padded.

Why is this a free gift for an 18.4" laptop? Will it fit that large of a laptop?

My MSi 17" laptop has extra room in this backpack. I looked up the actual dimensions of a new MSi 18.4" and it shows 16.85" x 12.36" x 1.66"-2.52". I just went and measured the laptop slot in the backpack and it will fit an 18.4" with these dimensions. It will be snug, but it will fit.
