Can I use this adapter to connect a second monitor to a computer that has extra usb port but doesnt have a dvi port?

No, though it looks similar, that is a display port connection, not USB.  Your computer would have to have an open display port connection.   These are relatively similar in size and shape to a USB port, but will have a single beveled edge. In contrast, USB ports are perfectly rectangular, while HDMI ports have beveled edge on each side (the connector is trapezoidal).  Even if you have a display port connection it is not 100% certain you can run an extra monitor; sometimes it is an either-or connection.  Most graphics devices produced since DVI was created can handle at least two monitors though.  If your computer does not have display port, it may have hdmi or vga.

My DVI cord does not have the 4 prongs around the wide prong. Will it work in this adapter? I believe my DVI cord is correctly called a DVI - I

Hi Dennis,  The female DVI connector on this adaptor is a universal port and will support all DVI cable connectors.  The four pins you describe are only found on DVI-I cables surrounding the bar connector on the right.  The Display Port is the latest generation of digital connections and this adaptor enabled me to connect an older monitor with a single-layer DVI-D port and cable.  3 years and still working fine.

Question 3

I purchased this for a new machine and graphics card (Gigabit 1080 ti) with an older display (viewsonic vx2235wm). The display worked fine on my old card (GTX 970) but it was DVI to DVI. Any reason this shouldn't work with this adapter?

No reason why it shouldn't work but know this. These type of adapters can down scale but don't function when up scaling .  If you plug the display port side into your 1080 and then use a male to male DVI cord to the monitor. That's a down scale . It should be fine !

Question 4

New monitor only has DP connection and docking station only have dvi. Will this work?

This will not likely work the way you need it to since this is intended for conversion of a display port signal (output from the display port of a video card or system) to a DVI cable connection intended for connection to a monitor with a DVI input.  As both are digital signals, I doubt the adapter was intended for bidirectional use.

Besides that, it sounds like your intended purpose requires an adapter with opposite gender ends. This adapter has a male display port connector and a female DVI connector.  You need an adaptor that has a male DVI and a female display port.

Question 5

When using this adapter.. I get a lag in response time when moving my mouse.  I am using a DVI to HDMI cable along with the adapter to my HDTV.  Do you any of you experience the same thing and if not what do you think maybe the reason why I have this issue?

We have dozens of computers here that use this exact adapter and none exhibit delay of the type you describe.

The first, simple thing I would do is move the mouse to another USB port to see if one is better than another.

That being said, a Google search on "mouse port lags with displayport adapter" turned up many cases and solutions, although primarily with Apple computers. You might want to work through those.

Question 6

1)If it is possible, how do I get audio thru this device?  I have bought a DVI-D to HDMI cable to support this adapter.  Is it possible at the moment I may have bought the the wrong cable and adapter for my needs?  I have a HP DC7900.

2)Would have it been easier If I just gotten the DP to HDMI passive video adapter?

Enter an answer to this question.DisplayPort can send both video and multichannel audio just like HDMI.  DisplayPort came out 2 years before HDMI for only PC video established by VESA.  HDMI started with TV and expanded into PC and tablets with the mini connector.  DVI-I cable supports digital audio however a higher end video card supporting DVI-I with audio connection is needed.
