Question 1

Will this converter work both directions for the conversion? My needs specifically require that I am able to convert from HDMI to VGA with the audio out in that direction as well.

The unit is powered by a usb connection, you need a usb spot to plug into, so it is extremely unlikely that you can use the HDMI capability as an "extension cord".  If all you need is a VGA extension cord those are available if you look.  Although I've never tried to use it in the manner you are suggesting, I honestly do not think it would work.  It is designed to connect a laptop with a VGA out connection to a TV or monitor that has HDMI input for video and audio.

Question 2

My PC only has one HDMI port, will this allow me to use it as a secondary monitor for an extended display?

If you video card supports HDMI and VGA ports working simultaneously in multi-monitor mode - then yes. If it can only use either HDMI or VGA - then no. Check the manual - most likely, it will work with both.

Question 3

Has anyone used this with a VGA monitor and Chromecast?

Have not used this with Chromecast.  Just with a HP laptop and its VGA output to a TV that only has HDMI input.  Overall, it has worked very well.  The picture quality is good, but not great, but no worse than I would have expected. The unit definitely needs USB power to work, and each of the cords from the adapter are kind of short, about 8", so make sure the plugs for the three connections are within that distance. In summary, would recommend for a basic VGA to HDMI conversion.

Will this connect an older laptop computer to hdmi TV?

It was able to do that for me. I inserted into the VGA of the laptop along with audio cables to get it to play through HDMI

Question 5

I have a 2008 macbook pro.  Use of the adapter results in video projection, but no sound output when plugged in.   Any suggested work arounds?  Note: This laptop is 4 years prior to the inclusion of HDMI support as part of the OS/hardware by Apple.

You need to not only plug in the VGA plug into your laptop but also verify that you have sound available to your headphone out audio connection on the laptop and as long as you can hear sound with a headset unplug the headset and plug in the 3.5 mini plug that is there into the same spot on the laptop that the headset was plugged into then connect your HDMI cord into the adapter and plug the other end of the HDMI cord into your TV or Monitor (w/sound capability) or even a Projector that also has sound capability.  I have mine plugged into a (Windows) Lenovo laptop that is about the same age as your Mac and it works great connected to both a Projector as well as my 70" Sony TV.

Question 6

I would like to use this on either a Fujitsu M2010 with VGA 1024x576 or an EEEPC 701 with 800x480 VGA. will it work for either/both of them? The exact combinations are not on the specs. thank you!!

Even though the exact combination of screen settings isn't shown generally your system will search and set to a setting that is acceptable to both the computer system and the video screen you are hooking it to.  If it doesn't do it automatically you can set the system up manually (a bit more difficult but possible) to match what you are wanting.

What amount of power does this item require from the USB port?

I don't have a way to monitor the power required by the device. However the standard usb port is 5VDC max and .5 -.9 A . The device doesn't get to warm, So I would guess the requirements are on the low end maybe a 1/4 watt. This is consistent with other circuits that preform the same function.

Question 8

Does this adapter support 640x480? I would guess it does but that resolution isn't listed as supported in the specs, just 800x600 and up.

I don't know the answer.  This device didn't work to convert VGA to HDMI in the situation where I wanted it, so it's just sitting on a shelf until another situation comes up to try again.

The failure was with an unusual piece of equipment.  The HDMI input was to a 100 inch LCD screen in a conference room.  The input went through a complex box that controlled a variety of possible inputs and not directly to the display panel.

It did work at home when I connected it to my HD TV, but I didn't try 640x480 since what I wanted was an HD connection, and the computer I was using was running Windows 8.1 which didn't offer that low a resolution.

What gender is the HMDI connector? Do I need a male or female cable connection at the converter?

As can easily seen in the pictures of this connector the HDMI connection is female so a regular male to male (male on each end) HDMI cord would be used to plug into it and also into the monitor/TV that you would be connecting it to.

Question 10

How long is the audio cord? The microphone jack is on the opposite side of my Lenovo W530 laptop from the usb and vga connectors. Will I need a female to male extension to make this work?
