Is this what I need to connect between an Macbook pro and a Dell monitor with a display port input?

Yes, this is exactly what you'll need. Just make sure the connection on the dell monitor is the full size display port and not the mini.

is this a version 1.1 or 1.2 cable or is there a difference?

The description said it was a DP 1.2 cable. It works as a 1.2 cable with my late 2012 Mac Pro and my Dell 4K monitor. I get 60 Hz with the 1.2 cable as it is supposed to work.
