Is this a switch matrix? I need to be able to connect Input 1 to output 4 for example. Single inputs should only be connected to a should on be connected to singles outputs. Will this handle this?

4 ins and 4 outs, but all 4 ins connect to a single, selectable out. The ins are not individually steerable

Do you need to use the remote switch to change between machines or is there a button on the device itself that does this as well?

You must use the remote switch. It has a fairly long thin wire and I placed it near my keyboard. Or attach it to the box -- or if you are comfortable with altering the device (goodbye warranty) - splice another switch onto it. It LACKS a button per output. Even at that I find it vastly more reliable than my old KV(M was not being used) I was using for switching.
