Can this be used with a SATA dvdburner to an eide cable?

I did not use this with a DVD burner. I attempted to use it to install a SATA hard drive in a digital sound recorder that only had an IDE interface. It did not work in that instance because of the proprietary operating system in that particular device. However at only 12 dollars it is worth trying since IDE DVD are pretty rare in today's market place.

let me ask that a different way to make sure i know what you mean. i want to connect 3 ide drives to an sata mobo. can i just use the one 3-headed ide ribbon i have to connect this to my 3 ides or would i need one of these for each of my ides?

This device takes a parallel cable from the motherboard, then has a SATA cable output to convert the parallel signal to Serial ATA (one cable) to your hard drive or DVD devices. It's a way of CONVERSION, if you buy a Hard Drive or CD/DVD drive that doesn't have a SATA connection left (or one at all) on the motherboard (no support). For instance, I purchased a DVD drive, but ran out of SATA cables and/or socket on my motherboard. With this device I was able to take advantage of the parallel socket on the motherboard, and convert the signal from the ribbon cable to a SATA single wire cable. Problem solved for me.

Any Type of SATA cable will work.  You will of course also need an IDE cable.  Since you are converting from (to) IDE, SATA cable speed ratings will not make a difference.  You just need to make sure all the cables are of a length to make it work without stretching.  You will also need to insure that you have the small 4 pin (Floppy) power plug to run power to it.  
As a FYI: You should make sure that you support the cables where you plug the device directly into a hard drive or CDRom, so it does not weigh it down and try to disconnect it.
I have not had any issues and have installed this on multiple computers for multiple customers over the past few years.

'supports up to two channels/devices'...so i just need one to run my dvd rom AND hdd?

I don't believe so.  You don't daisy chain SATA.  You could get two of these and connect to both parts of your IDE cable to have two items connected.

Alex f asked a simple question. Can this converter be used to continue using ide hard drives with a sata/usb only mobo. Basically, is this backwards compatible and if so how many ide drives can be daisy chained with the ide ribbon cable? Plug the femail end of the old ribbon cable into this adaptor and the female connectors into the ide drives?
