My current monitor has a DVI input. Can I use this cable alone to link to the display port on my pc or do I need something in addition to this cable to maintain my digital display?

This cable can connect directly from your DP output to your DVI input.  No additional cables or adapters are necessary.

Will this cable work by itself if it's being used to connect a DP++ output to one, dual-link dvi-d input? Thanks.

With a DP++ Output this adapter/cable should work just fine to connect to a DVI-D input (That's what the ++ part tells you, that you can use a passive adapter for DVI-D or HDMI output), but the signal will be single link, not dual (limiting your maximum resolution to about 1080p).  If you need higher resolution, you'll need an active adapter that specifies supporting Dual-Link.
