Is this a 4 pin female to 3 pin male adapter? It's not indicated on the  site and I can't tell looking at the picture of the female end.

The ones that I received are 4 pins on both ends - which is good since the 4 pin connector is backward compatible with the older 3 pin connector (on the female side the "key" is in the same location and the extra socket hangs off the end, on the male side the extra pin just isn't used). I have used these with 4 pin PWM fans as well as standard 3 pin fans

Is this backwards compatible with 3 pin plugs? My MOBO has 4 pin headers that are, but all my fans are 3 pin but I do plan to upgrade in the near future but just want to get up and running for now. Dont want to buy 3 pin extensions and then have to get 4 pin ones in 6 mos.

Taebin, all my headers are PWM 4 pins and using some 3 pin fans. You can't go wrong with them, the male connector is 3 - 4 pins. Make sure you stress test the connectors for any lose pin. Push back if you have any.
