will HTML computer to VGA monitor be compatable?

OK. I bought this to hook ip my PC's VGA to my HDMI TV input but it dosen't work that easy.  This will work in reverse only HDMI out to VGA Monitor in.  Didn't work for my application had to get a HDMI Video card. Hope this helps you .

Will it work the other way? My computer has a vga out, but the monitor has only HDMI in.

I do not believe so. It will work from HDMI out to VGA input on a television. I believe what you want is an active adapter, so I suggest you look for VGA (male) to HDMI (male) active adapter.

No because VGA does not support audio.

Yes, they have them.  I just bought one a couple of days ago.  I got it to connect my new Bblu-Ray player to my old Lcd TV, but I forgot that my TV also requires a dual audio cable for sound.  My Blu-Ray, of course, doesn't have audio outputs.  I did find a box on Newegg that would fix things, but decided to just wait until I get a new TV.  I will use the cable to go from my PC graphics board to my old CRT display.

It puts feed from vga to hdmi non-vice versa. If that answers your question. Ex you cant plug a it into a hdmi output then into a VGA monitor.
IDK why it doesn't work backwards.

it will only work in specific situations for example some vga video cards support digital output and also some projectors use this type of cable, but other than that this cable can not convert from digital to analog without a converter and with said converter this cable would likely not be useful.

It will work as long as the laptop output is HDMI and the television input is VGA.
