how or what cables do I need to switch out an old but unused stargate hard drive housing windows vista premium? My HP compaq just crashed and no recovery in sight,but the pins on the one I have will need new cables like the nippon ones.

You either have the old school ribbon ATA strip, (which is obsolete), or you have the serial ATA which connects identical to a sata.
