Is this just the adapter or does it come with the RGB LED strip?

this is just an adapter to connect it to your motherboard as it has leds installed already for power button and the front of the case and such. you can purchase the strip as well and control all the leds with your motherboards system of course your mobo needs to have the rgb connection as well.

I wasnt going to answer but it might influence your decision to combine msi/enthoo suites. Somewhere along the line I experienced a software conflict my system began to freeze at the start, then applications would CTD. Finally the system just went dead. Wiped my baby reinstalled everything short of the three MSI apps and she runs again. I am running a Z270 Gaming Pro Carbon on the Enthoo Luxe... but that first experience left me rather put off, and i havent had the courage to try combining them all in the Mystic app again. It would not suprise me if the work fine, but that was my experience.  I have a very nice lighting scheme running the respective apps for each light on my baby, but hey that is bloat ware essentially, so might not be a good solution for you. Sorry I am useless :p

Could I use this adapter to have the button on my phanteks case (evolv atx tempered glass) control led strips from cablemod?

I own a Phanteks case and i have a LED strip connected to the the button , there should be an open ended connector that's  part of the button wiring, i have my LED strip plugged in there and it changes colors with the button, you shouldn't need the adapter for this, but if you have a RGB MB with RGB ports on the MB this adapter will allow you to attach both ,LED strips and your button to the MB and all LED's will display the same colors.

will this work on the asus maximus 8 formula with cablemod cables hooked up to the mobo?

I have the ASUS hero alpha, and using the phanteks LED strips, plugs right up so if the cablemod has the same connection; which i believe it should (4pin) you should be good.  Just remember to do the color calibration on the Aura lighting program to get the correct color assigned and you'll be set

I have an extra large, double wide, custom case that has been modified. Can this adapter be used as an extension cable between the motherboard's RGB header and a Phanteks Halos RGD LED fan frame located quite a distance from the RGB LED header?

It will work with any strips or headers as long as they are 4 pin.

The adapter is used to connect the Case to the Motherboard. You can just attach the cooler to the Motherboard

You would fry your RGB strips instantly, been there tried that.

If you have a Asus motherboard with a rgb header yes. Ide make sure it's Asus and with a 4 pin rgb header first.
