does this come with a displayport cable?

No sadly it does not. Most video cards sold now are without cables in the boxes. At the bottom of the information on the MSI website in small lettering it says (cables sold separately).

My power supply only offers a 6-pin PCIe plug.  I understand that some of these MSI RX 470 boards come with the 6-pin plug and others come with an 8-pin plug.  If I receive one of the 8-pin varients, would I be able to plug in my 6-pin PCIe power cable or would I be forced to buy a new power supply?

You can get a 6 pin to 8 pin adapter. Some graphics card include it. If your Power supply has 6 pin adapter it should handle any rx470 fine.

Ok, just curious, does this come with the DVI-to-VGA adapter?

No. Only the card, driver disk, and manual are included in the package.

does this GPU support 3 monitors at a time?

Yes. Eyefinity from ATI supports as many monitors as you can connect. Max resolution varies on each card however and performance varies.

What are the processor requirements for this card?

Most modern quadcore over 3.5 GHZ would be fine for this processor. I have a G3258 dual core pentium overclocked to 4.3GHZ and it works fine for most game but the dual core does bottleneck the GPU in a few games. Don't forget this card is more powerful than a Radeon 7970 which is still considered a highend card. So a quadcore intel or one of Amd's multicore processors should work just fine.

Is this the same as the rx480 4gb when overclocked?

No, it is not the same when overclocked. The RX480 has 36 CU's while the RX470 has 32. Which computes to about 300 more stream processors. With most other things about the two cards being somewhat equal as they are both using essentially the same chip. 
   If you want that much greater performance, I recommend scrounging up the extra $40 to get the MSI RX480. Why stress the card to such a degree over $40?  The 480 is really built around 1440 gaming. The 470 is designed for 1080 gaming.  I would buy accordingly for what the cards are designed for. If all you play are things like DOTA, then you can spend even less as the RX460 is designed for people that primarily play e-sports

Is this RX-470 Virtual Reality Ready?

I am fairly certain the answer is NO. If you want a card for VR you need to go a step up and get a RX 480/580 8GB

For which OS' are there drivers, and which are missing?  Specifially, I'm running Win7-64-bit, but I'd like to know any future gotchas for later upgrades to my setup.   Thanks!

AMD should have universal driver for Win7 64bit.  You can check for driver support directly at AMD.  To get optimum performance for the RX 470 or RX 480, you need to install DirectX 12 and above.  If you have Windows 8 or Windows 10, latest DirectX will be auto-installed.

I bought a R7-240 MSI because it was for multi-monitors... it didn't work worth a darn. One monitor worked fine and the second was very poor (degraded and hard to read the text) and the third didn't work at all.  Will this card work with three monitors? I am working into having three ultrawide LG monitors... but not for gaming. I am looking for something inexpensive. Will this card work for that?

Passmark video benchmark for R7 240 is 957 and for RX 470 is 7249 so it is obvious to me that your expectation is too high and your setup is underpower.  Beside a decent GPU, you also need a decent CPU for multi-monitor setup.  For 2 monitor display and above, I always try to get a card with Passmark above 1500; for 4 monitor display, above 3500.  Currently, I use RX 470 for 4 ASUS 1920x1080 monitor display with CPU Passmark above 8000 and it works fine.  Screens go black and returns to normal in a blink once in a while.  I used Nvidia dual GTX 580s, GTX 670, GTX 680, GTX 770 and they also works well for 4 monitors.  They also blink from normal to black and back to normal many times a day.  Don't know why, but I think some kind of video card crashes and reboots when I have too many web pages on screen that use Flash.  You will need to get some good high speed cables such as Display port to HDMI, DVI to HDMI, HDMI to HDMI to hook up 4 screen display.  Cheap cable can limit display and crash your monitors.

Conclusion, RX 470 will work well for 4 monitor display, use a bit less electricity, and great for either work pn 4 screens or single screen game play.  When game play, don't combine your 4 screens into 1 big one for GPU demanding 3D games.  Display the 3D game on single screen and use the other 3 screens for web 2D display.

there are plently of benchmarks out there and it overall seems from my experience with it to have beat my 4gb 960 by a considerable margin of up to 62% faster
