I have a mini ITX from giggabyte that has an on board wifi and bluetooth card from a mini atheros card. Would this run in that place of the wifi atheros card with a wire adapter?

Hello, 
 Not sure what you are trying here, but I'll try to guess this, If the card is on board, you should be able to run both, or disable the on board card through the bios ( not in the Device Manager) Also, depends on what OS your currently running.
  So from the question you have, you are doing away with the wireless and going Firewire? Correct.

What is the 9 pin connector on the front of the board that looks like a USB header?  What does it do?

The 9-pin connector is for hooking up the card to a firewire port on the front panel. A cable extends from this front panel port to the pins on the card. Your case has to have this front panel port and the cable built in. Under no circumstances should you hook it up to a USB port. Firewire is an old technology since it has been superseded by USB so the probability of finding a case  with a front panel firewire port is low however you may find it on an older case.

Will this device work with my MacBook Pro laptop?

It depends on the model of macbook pro. I know some of the newer models have made it even more expensive to add a PCI express card to the macbook pro.

I can tell you that my experience with the card in question has been hit and miss. I am running mine on a hackintosh build with Mountain Lion and it only seems to work sporadically. I lose connection all the time. This is most likely due to an improper kext file, but I really have nothing good to say about the card in an OSX environment.

I would google your exact macbook pro model and go from there to see if it will work for you? Did your built in firewire port go out...or are you just trying to add an 800?

I have just purchased a DEll XPS 8700 with Win. 8.1 64 bit.
I am setting this up for a home recording studio. I will be running an audio 
interface into it. Is this the card i need? Support told me X1and x4 ports are open for fire wire card. I have seen a few on this site. What do I need?

Hello,
 Yes, I have this setup in my studio. Win7 x64. I have a Makie Firewire interface I use. Had to get firmware update for both, Win and the card. Make sure the Audio Interface is fully updated, not sure what your using.
Card is right for a home studio setup.

will this card work in a asus m5a78l-m/usb3 motherboard running windows 7?

Thanks Trevor. I really want to be sure that it does I need it for my Sony hvr v1u 1080 hd videocam it's the only way to get the dv tapes to the pc. And I just installed this motherboard in my pc the other one had a built in FireWire but this one does not. I just want to make sure that it will work in the pci express slot on this motherboard

What is the output power of the 1394b firewire port?  If it is less than 12W is there a way to boost it?

from the IEEE 1394 page on wikipedia

"In its six-conductor or nine-conductor variations, it can supply up to 45 watts of power per port"

Although that line is marked with a citation needed.

Later under the firewire 400 section it says

"Typically a device can pull about 7 to 8 watts from the port;"

that line is cited with an apple developer page that is no longer available.

My thought is that the meager 12w you are needing should be available from a modern card although testing would be the only way to know for sure.
