How does this connect to a laptop?

These units usually comes with a host card, that you would need to install in a PCIE slot. Desktop only.

However, the best way to confirm specs is actually by checking the manufacturer's website. With many of our products you can click on the "Warranty & Returns" tab and you will find the Manufacturer's contact info, including the manufacturer's website.

Is this item capable of supporting a GEFORCE GTX 1080 (8GB)?

No.  The reason why I say this is because it doesn't support PCIe x16, which I assume your graphics card is.  It supports PCIe x1.  So therefore, no support for graphics cards in my humble opinion.  The only way it would, I suppose, is if your graphics card fits this description of PCIe x1.

My card requires an additional power input, which would be  provided by power supply fan connector if used inside a computer. Does this unit have such a power source?

No it does not.  It just has the four slots on the inside.  Power supply is 12v.  It might be modified to suit your application, but that's at your own risk, obviously.
