Does anyone have a part number to use to purchase additional trays for this unit?

Sean - after some digging around online I did find a part number, and yes NewEgg carries them. Why they didn't 'suggest' it I do not know. Newegg has it in SERVER ACCESSORIES. This form will not allow me to enter any part numbers.

Supports up to 4TB. What about drives with smaller capacity?

I have one of these and two of an earlier generation. I started using these at least 5 years ago and have used them all with USB 2.0 and eSATA, with drives from 320GB to 4TB (and many sizes in between). I haven't used them with USB 3.0 only because I don't have a recent enough machine to have a USB 3 port. The eSATA cables don't attach very securely, we occasionally need to re-seat them on the server or the external drive. Other than that, these have been very reliable.

How well does 'hot swap' work with linux and what drivers are needed? I want to use this as a RAID 1 with one built in drive and 2 removeable drives with one drive removed at all times (swaping between the 2 removeables).

I can't answer your question because I'm using the enclosure just as a stand-alone enclosure. Having said that, it is hands-down the best enclosure I've ever seen- the build quality is excellent. I'm really impressed with the company, so I'd try contacting SANS DIGITAL with your question.
