Will this hub work without the ac power adapter? or is the power adapter needed even if your device draws less than the 900ma that USB 3.0 ports supply?

It will work as a USB hub without external power. As a paranoid person I would not try to run an actual hdd without the external power.

Is this adapter powered (ie does it give devices power, or just support data transfer)?

If you plug the included 2 amp 5 volt power supply in it will provide power to the devices. It will not be a full 1 amp on all 3 USBs and a hard drive but a total of 2 amps.

Does this device support drives larger that 1.5TB?

Yes. The hub is dumb, the OS you are using decides what the hub will handle. I found it to be of good value. Good luck.

Does it also support USB 2.0?

Yes in my use, both 2 and 3 are supported. Also, regarding the sata, mine hasn't been seen by win7 or mint 17. I purchased for the 2amps and haven't been disappointed by its ability to power a raspberry pi 2 model b.
