how do you switch between computers?

There is a small push-button switch that uses a cable that is separate from the other included KVM cables. The switch cable is approx. 5 feet long, so the switch can be routed to just about anywhere.

Question 2

Will this item work without using the monitor connections? I need a KM switch only (no video). I want to use a single keyboard/mouse and switch control between a desktop and a laptop - keeping the monitors separate.

(Some of the software-based solutions will not work because the computers are on two different networks.)

Yes.  I am sort of using it that way.  I have a desktop with a HDMI going directly from the desktop to the monitor and a laptop using the VGA directly to the same monitor.

I have one KB and mouse and I use the KVM to switch between them.  Then I just use the monitor OS to change the source.  I did it this way because I wanted to use the HDMI for the input from my desktop as it should have higher quality.

Question 3

I need to connect 2 PCs to 1 monitor, 1 USB keyboard, and a wireless mouse that has a USB nano-receiver.  I will also be using a USB foot pedal and headphone set, but just on the secondary PC, so they won't need to work with both PCs.  Is this the correct KVM switch for my needs as described?  And would I just plug the nano-receiver into the KVM to allow it to work with both PCs or ?

This should do the trick. The shared monitor, keyboard, and nano receiver will plug into the IOGEAR block. The split cords will then go to each computer. 
Just make sure both computers and the monitor have vga option. And make sure the nano receiver will be close enough to the mouse to function (I had to get creative for this). 
Your headset and foot pedal can just go to the computer you want to use them on. 
Also,  if you haven't already,  make sure the mouse and keyboard function when plugged dirdctly into each computer before using them with the KVM. This will ensure the correct drivers are loaded. (shouldn't matter,  but just in case)

Will it work with 1 computer running xp and another with Win 10 pro?

It has nothing to do with what os u have. As long as u have 2 usb ports available on both computers it will work. Make sure the vga port is the right one for you. Many different one these days such as older VGA, DVI and display port etc.

does this come wit the necessary cables?

There are three sets of cables that come out of the connector.  One is the switch you see in the picture.  The other two ends consist of a VGA and 2 x USB.

Does it work with Wndow 8 and Vista?
I have VGA on the monitor. Can I use with one optical mouse and one USB3 keybord?

I dont see why not. This switcher is pretty primitive. It will select between 2 VGA inputs without any problems. USB is a bit more of an issue. This thing is only USB 2.0 speeds, at best, so your keyboard will need a USB3 fallback to USB2/1.1. Secondly. This switch does not maintain a presence of the device on one computer. It is literally like yanking the Mouse and Keyboard from one computer, and plugging it into another. When you switch back to the other it "unplugs" the USB and "plugs" it into the other. You will hear the device removal and insertion sound.

This will easily work with Vista and 8 without any problems, unless the OSs hate the USB unplug/replug style. Works well for basic HID mice and keyboards but if your Keyboard needs an advanced driver, then you might be out of luck.

Is this a remote access card such dell remote access card or IPMI OR KVM-OVER-IP? Is it compatible with Dell E6230 certified for Ubuntu 12.04 server?

Hi Henry, I'm not sure if I understand your question, and may be providing too simplistic an answer, but this device allows you to use a single set of Keyboard, Video, Mouse with two computers.  I don't think the OS or computer hardware matter.  You should have a USB mouse a USB keyboard, and a VGA cable (or converter) for your monitor.  
I have two Windows PCs hooked up to mine and it works nicely.

Does this iogear kvm switch ( GCS22U ) work with 64 bit Windows 8?

it works with Windows 7 64 bit so there should be no reason why it should not work with windows 8 64bit.  It basically functions as a usb hub that you can switch on and off between 2 systems for the keyboard and mouse.  The vga port is just a basic switch.

Can I use one USB port for a shared web cam? I have a unified keyboard/mouse so will only use one USB port for that.

I have the switch.  The two USB ports are switched separately.

I see no reason why the CAM wouldn't switch properly.   However, without really trying it, there is no guarantee that there isn't something about the port switch that might prevent it.

But I really can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work.   (I'm an electrical engineer who specializes in digital communications.)

Question 10

Will it work with Windows 10 on one computer and Ubuntu on the other, and I use a wireless keyboard and mouse.?

Booting either machine will probably need you to have the selector set to that machine to recognize a keyboard but I am running a Windows 10 and Linux box. So yes it should work for you.
