Question 1

Can anyone explain this RAM overclocking business?  My MoBo has a maximum of 1600 MHz native with anything above, and up to 3000 MHz listed as OC.  Do I get to put in a 1600 MHz stick and OC it?  Or do I need to a faster RAM?  Would I need extra dedicated fans for the RAM?  And finally, would there be any real world benefit for gaming to make it worth the trouble/expense?

I have this exact kit running at 1866 OC out of the box. Yes you can try and overclock the ram by modifying its timings voltage and frequency.  It would be better to choose a faster rated ram if you want a higher speed than 1600.  As long as you have good airflow in your case you probably wont need dedicated fans. There is very little difference in games with faster ram.  Your better off spending the extra money towards multiple GPUs. I would not run anything less than 1600 and nothing more than 2133. There does not appear to be any real increase in performance.

Is this compatible with the ASUS Rampage IV Black edition?

Yes I see no problem with it working correctly. In fact you can go up to DDR-3 2800 with no problem. Smart move getting 16Gb in two Dimm's, with 4K monitors becoming more common. Plus the new games having more and more textures. Probably your best move.

Question 3

Will this work on a Z97-E/USB 3.1 motherboard? Not listed on Asus QVL . Parts picker says yes. I already ordered it and now I just don't know what to do.

Hey Chuck. Yes, that will work for sure. You may need to put the frequency back to 1600 MHz manually, but that happens more often than not with other motherboard and memory brands. Good luck on your build ! Get back here if you have any other questions.

Question 4

Is XMP supported on an amd motherboard? I have a 970A-G46 MSI mobo that has XMP in the bios and i'm running Mushkin 3x4gb 1600mhz ram, memory timings are 9-9-9-24 and they support XMP but everytime I enable XMP in my bios the pc won't boot.  Another Question is, I ordered an fx8350 cpu and a GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3 Rev4 Mobo and am looking for good ram for gaming on a budget and would like to install a min of 16gb. I want to know if this ram would work for my new mobo?

Thank you for the answer. I did check the compatibility list for the mobo in question. I wasn't sure of what it meant by  Only one DIMM per channel is supported for DDR3-1866MHz and higher speed as using an AM3+ CPU.
I would like to run the 1866mhz ram but don't want to spend all that money if I will have problems doing so and I would like them to run in dual channel mode. I do know that other then what was tested with this mobo may also work fine I was just fishing alittle hoping someone with the same mobo was running these and if they work ok for their setup.

Generally it will be heat sinks, timings / voltages, if it was OC'ed to reach that spd or if it's the native spd. Unless you have heat issues or plan on over clocking the memory, honestly any Corsair memory should be an awesome performer.
